Rise, Girl, Rise: Our Sister-Friend Journey. Together for All.
Gloria Steinem and Leymah Gbowee, illus. by Kah Yangni. Orchard, $19.99 (40p) ISBN 978-1-338-88894-2
Highlighting the twinned stories of their egalitarian awakenings, the authors emphasize the importance of sisterhood in this persuasively rallying work. Steinem opens, describing an itinerant childhood in the U.S. as an antique dealer’s progeny: “Home was where our trailer took us,” she writes, remarking that their travels eventually revealed the “unfairness women and girls face.” Gbowee follows, recounting a childhood in Liberia punctuated by the arrival of a war that generates “injustices against women and girls.” Shifting from “me” to “we,” rhythmic narrationdeclares,“We come to see that when I put my hand in yours,/ together we do what we could never do alone.” Yangni’s vibrant-hued, almost three-dimensional illustrations show figures of various abilities and skin tones marching forth united under skies washed with warm electric hues. “How This Story Came to Be” concludes. Ages 4–8. (Feb.)
