This 1891 romance is an easy read. When floodwaters devastate Zenus Dane’s Philadelphia textile mill, he needs to salvage what is left of his damaged inventory. Though estranged from his Aunt Priscilla, he soon recognizes that one of her award-winning original quilt patterns could provide the perfect use for his textile scraps and thereby save his business. Mary Varrs needs an illustrator to help her complete her tomato study, which she is depending on to obtain a job in academia. When she spots a botanical sketch on an invitation to Priscilla’s quilting bee, she believes her neighbor may be her salvation. As Zenus and Mary compete for Priscilla’s assistance, they realize they must work together if either is going to succeed. The situation is further complicated by Zenus and Mary’s mutual disdain, as well as the secrets they harbor. As Zenus tries to move past prior indiscretions, he must find a way to prove to Mary he is a changed man. Those looking for a strong Christian theme may be disappointed, as the religious element is cursory. Agent: Tamela Hancock Murray, Steve Laube Literary Agency. (Dec.)
