The A Circuit

Georgina Bloomberg and Catherine Hapka. Bloomsbury, $16.99 (272p) ISBN 978-1-59990-641-6; $9.99 trade paper ISBN 978-1-59990-634-8

In her first book, Bloomberg (daughter of New York City mayor Michael Bloomberg) and Hapka (the Horse Diaries series) offer a fast-paced kickoff to a series that horse enthusiasts are sure to enjoy. Operating safely within the conventions of clique lit, the book alternates between the perspectives of three horse-obsessed heroines from different backgrounds: Tommi, a no-nonsense billionaire's daughter; Kate, a sugar-sweet working student; and Zara, a defiant rock star's daughter, who blows in from the West Coast with fans and paparazzi in tow, ruffling feathers at the affluent Pelham Lane Stables outside New York City where Tommi and Kate show. The girls wear their insecurities on their riding jackets as they question their seriousness about the sport while exploring the complications of living in someone else's shadow, the confidence gained from riding, and the various motivations for desiring to be a part of the horse business. Though the book doesn't hold many surprises, the world of horse showing is a natural outgrowth of the genre, and riding fans should be satisfied by the requisite romantic and interpersonal dramas.
