A Real Prince Is Hard to Find: A Modern Fairy Tale

Joanna Rivard, illus. by Adam Larkum. Bloomsbury, $17.89 (32p) ISBN 978-1-61963-216-5

Rivard and Larkum take readers through an endearing, if highly edited, look back at the romance and marriage of Prince William and the Duchess of Cambridge. Though this story's "William" and "Kate" are never directly identified as their real-life counterparts, any kid who's even glanced at the magazines in the checkout line will know what's up. Rivard handles the mashup between "modern" and "fairy tale" adroitly and unironically: William grows up wondering if being king will be lonely, while little Kate "dreamed of meeting a handsome prince;" the two meet as equals at university and start out as "the very best of friends." Larkum, whose fluid ink line and use of color work may remind adults of Nadine Bernard Westcott, offers several visual winks: Kate, who lives "in the middle of the countryside," goes off to college accompanied by a pet sheep; William has a literate corgi and wears a hoodie with a royal crest. Overall, this is a sweet and sincere salute to young love, one that proves the age-old wisdom is right: celebrities, they're just like us. Ages 4%E2%80%938. (June)
