Berthoud believes that reading mindfully (reading at one’s own pace and concentrating on the mental processes involved in reading, rather than reading solely for content ) improves mental health, develops empathy and emotional intelligence, purges tragic emotions through artistic catharsis, and even slows one’s heart rate.
