Ashes: A Firefighter’s Tale

Mario Candelaria and Karl Slominski. Z2 , $19.99 trade paper (115p) ISBN 978-1-940878-03-4

Candelaria and Slominski tell a tale of courage, tragedy, and fortitude in this enjoyable book. Matt is a fire fighter—an excellent, committed, and particularly brave one with a hefty promotion waiting for him. But his future is snatched away when an accident leaves him with one leg and a long road to recovery. Matt himself is a warm, engaging lead that readers will take to immediately. Writer Candelaria has a particular gift for portraying the kind of casual banter friendships are built upon—a type of dialogue that many writers struggle with and often fail to perfect. Slominksi’s art is the book’s greatest strength: its dynamism, expression, and dense use of inks bring the story to life. The book is perhaps a little too pat: as harrowing as Matt’s injury is, nothing ever feels truly at stake given the story’s pervading sense of goodwill and perseverance. Indeed, an 11th-hour rescue on the Staten Island Ferry nearly plunges the tale into utter schmaltz. But this book remains a worthwhile read, perfect for any fan of everyday heroism. (Oct.)
