Satan’s Treasure

CPA Frank Ryman, the villain of Canadian author Volpentesta’s inept serial killer novel set in New York City in 1997, goes on a murderous rampage targeting models. Tasked with stopping the unknown killer is Det. Sgt. Lionel Jackson, who is fighting for respect after botching a hostage incident. Meanwhile, Robert Molinaro, a mediocre radio show host, gives Frank a platform on which to rant against the cult of female beauty. And Rachel Curran, a model trying to turn actress, enters a beauty pageant to launch her career. Will Rachel become Frank’s next victim? Too much detail about ordinary routines, a plethora of backstory, and digressions on such issues as gender, race, and poverty undercut the suspense. Frank is a stock character who was abused and neglected by his mother, a model and prostitute. The plot offers no surprises as it plods to a predictable close. (BookLife)
