Fly the Wild Echoes

Elizabeth Bailey. Amazon, $3.99 e-book (348p) ASIN B00AMIOWWM

In Bailey’s novel, Fliss has a breakdown after her lover is shot and killed. To recuperate, she ends up at a dreamy castle-cum-sanatorium in France called Chateau de Paix. Her first evening there, she meets the handsome Gerard in a rose garden, and sparks fly. Unfortunately, Gerard is her therapist—and already involved with the mannish Sigrid, heir apparent to the chateau. As time passes, Fliss confronts the secrets of her past, falls ever more deeply in love with Gerard, and meets the mysterious Edana, who time travels to the 18th century. Bailey can be commended for her consistent tone throughout this romance, but her prose is overheated and her time-travel plot thin. However, if you enjoy a fantastical world full of melodrama and torrid romance—and can suspend disbelief long enough to embrace Fliss and Gerard as locked in eternal love rather than ephemeral lust—this book fits the bill.
