Midnight in Everwood

This reimagining of The Nutcracker, Kuzniar’s adult debut (after the Ship of Shadows middle grade series), takes readers to a delectable world of fantastic confections. In 1906 England, Marietta Stelle’s dreams of becoming a ballerina are at odds with her parents’ domestic vision for her future, which hinges on her marriage to the mysterious Dr. Drosselmeier. As the date for what is to be Marietta’s final ballet performance approaches, Dr. Drosselmeier’s attentions take an ominous turn. Near midnight on Christmas, Dr. Drosselmeier interrupts Marietta dancing and offers her his hand in marriage. After she refuses and he turns threatening, she hides inside a grandfather clock—and finds herself transported into a world of magic, mayhem, and sweets. There she catches the attention of the cruel King Gelum. Marietta is not the only woman in his grasp, and all his captives must band together to find a way to escape. Kuzniar’s vivid fantasy landscape sucks readers in, with mouthwatering descriptions of candy castles balanced by the palpably threatening atmosphere of King Gelum’s court.
