Zoomer's Summer Snowstorm
Ned Young. Harper, $16.99 (32p) ISBN 978-0-06-170092-7
Zoomer's second picture book is every bit as surreal as his first. The black and tan puppy gets distracted while using the snow cone machine, and when he opens the window, "winter" gushes like a geyser into the sunny yard (to the annoyance of his baseball-playing brothers). Zoomer lets loose in his self-made winter wonderland, sculpting the snow into enormous sea creatures, dinosaurs, and the "polar empire of Zoomarctica." Although the ending has the feel of a non
sequitur (Zoomer gets hungry, cleans up the snow, and convinces his mother to make chili), readers will delight in the quirky juxtaposition of the dog's implausibly masterful ice sculptures with emerald grass and an azure sky. Ages 3%E2%80%937. (May)
