The Love Diet: A Personalized, Proven Program That Changes the Way You Feel to Transform the Way You Look

Connie Guttersen and Mark Dedomenico. HarperOne, $25.99 (320p) ISBN 978-0-06-230305-9
More than just a diet guide, this book from Guttersen (The Sonoma Diet), a nutrition instructor at the Culinary Institute of America, and Dedomenico, a former cardiovascular surgeon, presents a comprehensive plan for lifestyle changes. It includes seven stages, combining components of Guttersen’s Sonoma Diet, which “teaches a new level of consciousness about food and flavor,” and Dedomenico’s 20/20 Lifestyle program, which aims to restore metabolic balance. Foods are initially eliminated to target food sensitivities and then gradually reintroduced. The authors’ credentials are impressive, and their disclaimer to check with a doctor before starting is reassuring. However, despite their references to “extensive clinical research,” they cite little specific evidence other than the 20/20 Lifestyle Clinic case studies peppered throughout. A bibliography referencing this research and clinical studies backing up other parts of the text, such as the genetic component to binge eating mentioned in Chapter 3, would have been useful. The seasonings, recipes, and meal plans listed in the fourth section appear healthy and flavorful, with wholesome, easily sourced foods and basic nutrition facts. What sets this book apart from the deluge of other diet books on the market is its long-term focus on lifestyle and behavioral changes and on learning the importance of self-respect. (May)
