Race to the Bottom: Uncovering the Secret Forces Destroying American Public Education

Luke Rosiak. Broadside, $27.99 (352p) ISBN 978-0-06-305672-5

Daily Wire reporter Rosiak (Obstruction of Justice) delivers a blustering, unconvincing critique of the U.S. education system. Contending that public school curricula has become a vehicle for left-wing activists to impose their values on children, Rosiak accuses teachers and administrators of indoctrinating students in “critical race theory” and “punishing or purging” fellow staff members who disagree. Elsewhere, he alleges that ESL teachers are in “no rush to turn [their] kids into fluent English speakers and lose the justification for higher budgets,” and contends that if public school funding was “spent in virtually any other way than being fed into the educational bureaucracy, it could eliminate poverty in America overnight.” Rosiak also claims that the MacArthur Foundation and other philanthropic organizations are seeking to “transform America” by promoting equity initiatives, fostering youth activism on climate change and criminal justice reform, and supporting the work of progressive journalists and scholars. Heavy on innuendo and light on hard evidence, Rosiak’s conspiratorial view of American education is more suited to stoking Republican outrage than addressing real problems. This half-baked screed is all bark and no bite. (Mar.)
