AFTER 9/11: Photographs by Nathan Lyons

Nathan Lyons, . . Yale Univ., $35 (176pp) ISBN 978-0-300-10182-9

Founder of the Visual Studies Workshop in Rochester, N.Y., Lyons (Notations in Passing ) began photographing improvised signage (along with advertising) around the U.S. following September 11. The 150 duotones presented here give insight into public discourse around the events, from improvised memorial walls and patriotic bumper stickers to store window displays prominently featuring flags and antiwar wheat-pasted fliers. There are no people in sight. Yale art school dean Benson comments on the "parade of flags" while Reynolds gives a synopsis of Lyons's career. (Oct.)
