Positively You!: Change Your Thinking, Change Your Life

Jinger Heath. Golden Books, $22 (224pp) ISBN 978-0-307-44049-5

In 1981, Heath created BeautiControl Cosmetics, a company that allows women to sell her products directly to customers through home meetings called ""clinics."" After a slow start, the company has grown to its current rate of over $100 million in annual sales. Heath's approach is to teach women to believe in themselves and to allow them to set their own hours in order to make as much money as they wish. This sort of pyramid organization is not new, but Heath enthusiastically claims to have freed women from financial dependency and dead-end, underpaid jobs. Her book is not about starting your own business, however, or about becoming one of Heath's BeautiControl ""consultants"" or ""directors."" Using such automobile metaphors as ""rebuilding your engine""(her father was a used-car salesman), Heath gives a pep talk on positive thinking, making changes and getting what you want out of life. None of this is new, either, but in a pleasant, conversational tone, Heath offers much concrete advice for overcoming fears, setting goals, ""staying on the right road"" and ""keeping your wheels balanced."" With many exercises and probing questions to consider, her book can be a helpful tool for women who want to motor down a new route in life but aren't sure how to turn on the ignition. Author tour.
