The Way of Abundance: A 60-Day Journey into a Deeply Meaningful Life

Ann Voskamp. Zondervan, $18.99 trade paper (240p) ISBN 978-0-310-35031-6

Voskamp expands on her last book, The Broken Way, to help readers overcome loss and confront suffering through 60 helpful devotionals. She centers the book on ways of dealing with “brokenness,” with chapters that highlight how to keep going despite feeling brokenhearted, how the brokenhearted receive love from others, and strategies for releasing control in order to love unconditionally. Voskamp describes brokenness as the way to abundant life: “Abundance is found... in all the bits of our broken hearts. Abundance isn’t about having as much as you want—abundance is about having as much of God as you want.” With her characteristic intensity, Voskamp communicates to Christ followers that, despite past experiences, they can yield themselves to “givenness” (seeing oneself as part of God’s gift to the world). She believes that in order to overcome painful experiences, one needs to concentrate outwardly and seek out others in need. She ends each devotional with two questions that spark initiative and action: “How are you handing your whole self—your whole broken self—in givenness? How are you spending yourself to pay attention to joy?” Voskamp’s encouraging book nicely complements her previous text, providing direction for readers to heal themselves by discovering ways to serve others.
