A Wilderness of Mirrors: Trusting Again in a Cynical World

Mark Meynell. Zondervan, $18.99 trade paper (224p) ISBN 978-0-310-51526-5

People, institutions, government officials and religious leaders have all let us down, so how can we trust? Meynell (Cross-Examined), honorary curate at All Souls Church in London, thinks readers will be surprised by his suggestion that God is the answer. Organized into three sections, the book explores the history of Western society’s growing mistrust and cynicism, the resulting cultural consequences such as alienation and paranoia, and an appropriate Christian theological response. Pulling examples from scripture, history, literature, Hollywood, current news, and personal experience, Meynell argues that following God might be the way out of what he terms a “wilderness of mirrors” to a place of trust. The author’s wide-ranging exposition rambles as he quotes many people on many subjects, so the reader may get distracted along the way. Those who would find Meynell’s advice as surprising as he expects are unlikely to read his book. (May)
