Woman Angler

Laurie Morrow. St. Martin's Press, $24.95 (288pp) ISBN 978-0-312-15697-8

A committed fisherwoman only since 1995, freelance writer Morrow has picked up an encyclopedic knowledge of the art and science of angling in a remarkably brief time. To aid women who are taking up the sport in record numbers (there are now an estimated 15 million of them), she has composed a guide that purports to be written solely for them, but men, particularly beginners, could read it with profit. Morrow assumes that readers have no prior knowledge, and therefore has inserted in an early chapter a glossary including such words as ""net,"" ""hook,"" ""estuary"" and ""tributary."" She provides careful details on fly-fishing, clearly her favorite method of catching and landing fish, with step-by-step instructions on tying flies and casting, ocean fishing and bass fishing. She also adds an occasional recipe for salmon dishes, an unfortunate bit of ""poetry,"" testimonials from women who are as taken with the sport as she is, and dozens of valuable illustrations. This is a guide cast with precision into the waters of fishing lore. (Sept.)
