Working Mother Bk Time

Working Mother Magazine. Golden Guides from St. Martin's Press, $12.95 (176pp) ISBN 978-0-312-26273-0

As any working mother knows, time management is key to balancing family and work life, so this topic should be of interest to many women who struggle daily to organize their schedules and keep their priorities straight. The editors surveyed 200 Working Mother magazine subscribers to fill this volume with practical advice--ranging from how to clean out closets to how to negotiate flex time at the office. Few of the suggestions, however, seem particularly innovative, in spite of the claim in the editors' foreword that the book will provide a new approach to time ""arrangement."" To-do lists, family calendars, preparing for the following day the night before, lowering house-cleaning standards and getting husbands and kids to pitch in are just a few of the many familiar suggestions readers will find here. In addition to suggestions for time-saving methods at home, the book offers sections on making the most of time at work, with the focus on how to delegate tasks, form good work habits and efficiently manage time. The text is light, and the generous use of tips from working mothers and quotes from various authors of other ""how-to"" books reads more like an extended magazine article. Working mothers will find some useful ideas consolidated here, but avid readers of the magazine may sense they've been down this road before. (May)
