Transformers: The Ultimate Pop-up Universe

Matthew Reinhart, illus. by Emiliano Santalucia. Little, Brown, $37 (10p) ISBN 978-0-316-18662-9

Is there a franchise better suited to pop-up treatment than Transformers? Reinhart doesn’t disappoint with his ode to these “robots in disguise”: his Autobots and Decepticons don’t just pop up—with a pull of a tab, they transform, too. Santalucia’s illustrations capably balance the multiple generations and iterations of these characters, from cartoons and comics to toys and films, while brief text sections offer character quotes and history. Among the many show-stopping moments: Ravage ejects from Soundwave’s chest, Omega Supreme towers over Dinobots and Combaticons, and rivals Optimus Prime and Megatron convert from vehicles to robots. A must-have for diehard Transformers fans. Ages 6–up. (Oct.)
