Today I’m a Race Car Driver

Marisa Polansky, illus. by Maxine Lee. Farrar, Straus and Giroux, $8.99 (14p) ISBN 978-0-374-30439-3

A boy walks readers through a week in the life of a race car driver in one of four titles kick-starting a career-themed board book series. The book is die-cut in the shape of the racer himself. Inside, Lee uses left-hand pages to track the unfolding action (“On Thursday, my pit crew checks my car,” he explains. “Driving a race car is dangerous, so they make sure everything is working properly”), and labeled gear, tools, and other relevant objects appear at right. It’s a neat peek into the ins and outs of a racer’s life; even better is the title’s implicit suggestion that this child (or any reader) could easily land on another dream career tomorrow. Ages 2–4.
