The Eco-Kids #01: The Five Cat Club

Kathryn Makris. Avon Books, $3.5 (0pp) ISBN 978-0-380-77049-6

When best friends Cary, Jess and Sienna find a sack of abandoned kittens, they set out to find good homes for them; ultimately each of the girls keeps one, and two of their classmates take the others. The quintet comprise ``The Five Cat Club,'' which they start in order to help animals everywhere. At first the venture results in a string of disturbances: endless phone calls, more abandoned animals, unexpected publicity and a local protest. However, the club members finally realize the fruits of their efforts and see that even 12-year-olds can make a difference. Makris's (the Almost Sisters trilogy) timely series opener features a bustling cast that includes single-parent families, a handicapped person and children with varied ethnic and racial backgrounds. The characters explore animal-protection issues with vitality and commitment; by choosing to gather information before taking action, they serve as good examples for readers. Though the story progresses slowly, it ends with a burst of energy and optimism that will inspire young environmentalists. Ages 9-13. (Apr.)
