Sacred Practices for Conscious Living

Nancy J. Napier. W. W. Norton & Company, $25 (287pp) ISBN 978-0-393-04052-4

The word ""sacred"" in the title refers to ""that unnamable, indescribable source of life and consciousness that pervades every particle of reality."" Napier (Getting Through the Day) invokes a hodgepodge of spiritual beliefs to instill a reverence for life, rather than God, in everyday activities. Napier draws upon personal experience and then advocates behaviors-including the practices of compassionate action, honoring the body and mindfulness- designed to heighten the awareness of life. She relies on a superficial exposition of quantum physics to explore the areas of collective consciousness and the realm of miracles. Napier's thesis that sacred practices heighten consciousness is simple enough, but her cliche-filled writing is ultimately tiresome and repetitive. Even her recommended reading list lacks any stamp of authority as she encourages readers to browse the bookstores for titles that ""seem to call out to you."" Awkwardly written by a dabbler in spiritual disciplines, Napier's book is unlikely to ""call out"" to readers more than any other. (May)
