Glim the Glorious

Gayle Middleton. Alfred A. Knopf Books for Young Readers, $12.95 (55pp) ISBN 978-0-394-88081-5

When evil Baggy Barg, chief of the Gubgoblins, captures the lovely unicorn Elsari, all the good elves, fairies and woodland creatures of Glenelendale rally to rescue their friend. Led by the canny old elf Glim, Elsari's rescuers include irascible Zom, an emerald green forest cat; Fuzzbow, the timid yet valiant hare; Glim's racing snail Shilly Shally; and the magnificent luna moth Moonwing. The companions must venture into the dangerous realm of the wily Spider Queen Zenthora in order to trick her into spinning a magic web to use against the Gubgoblins. Armed with the web and accompanied by a band of little folk, the friends go forth to set Elsari free. This is a satisfying, old-fashioned magical adventure, in the best fantasy tradition. The lush, detailed paintings are a dazzling blend of magnificent, lifelike forest scenes and sparkling enchantment. Ages 5-10. (October)
