The Chinese Puzzle

Victorian England is the backdrop to an eerie mystery surrounding a Chinese gentleman, Chang, and his assailants; it is a mystery in which William, Flora and their guardian, the Amazing Rolandson, become immersed. The Chinese gentleman arrives on their doorstep just one day before William and Flora are to be packed off on holiday. When the children return to their home early, they find the place empty of both their guardian and Chang. William and Flora decide to search for Rolandson, but soon find themselves tied up in the hold of a ship full of opium. Graham's third book about the Rolandson family is grand adventure, pitting incidents of rousing villainy against Flora and William's initially innocent quest. The credible shifting of identities, skillful sleight of hand and the act of luring an old nemesis out of the shadows are just some of the tricks Graham employs, tied up in a style that is both invigorating and atmospheric.
