Who Lives In-- The Forest?

Ron Hirschi, Author, Galen Burrell, Illustrator, Galen Burrell, Photographer Dodd Mead $9.95 (32p) ISBN 978-0-396-09121-9
This nicely photographed nature book invites young readers to take a walk through the forest. ""Look up!'' or ``Peek through the branches,'' urges the narrator as he points out the chickadee or rabbit that dwells within. Baby owls, their ``feathers puffed in the breeze,'' are ``cradled in the sturdy branches'' and a squirrel turns each pine cone ``like corn on the cob, dropping tiny scales as he nibbles the seeds.'' The text assumes the reader's response: does the squirrel see the mother bear and her cub? ``No! It is a hungry coyote that frightened the squirrel.'' Although the organization is sometimes confusing, the book introduces each forest creature with sharply detailed and colorful photographs. An afterword for older readers and adults describes in which forest such animals are likely to be found. Ages 3-7. (November)
