Think and Grow Rich for Women: Using Your Power to Create Success and Significance

Sharon Lechter. Penguin/Tarcher, $25.95 (352p) ISBN 978-0-399-17082-9

Using techniques outlined in Napoleon Hill’s iconic Think and Grow Rich, Hill devotee Lechter, founder of Pay Your Family First, challenges readers to take control of their financial destinies. Lechter is highly positive about women’s opportunities today, particularly from an education and corporate standpoint. She admits women still face difficulties, but they’re at a tipping point as the primary consumers, inheritors, and soon-to-be controllers of two-thirds of the consumer wealth in the United States. The book’s focus on women and a plethora of inspirational quotes from successful women (the only man Lechter quotes directly is Hill) makes a wonderful change from the male-dominated voice in similar titles. In addition to worksheets helping readers form their own strategies, Lechter guides readers through the program, focusing on faith (religious and otherwise), the acquisition of knowledge, and the importance of imagination and persistence. Success, she notes, means different things for men and women. With wealth, for example, women are more likely to consider what they can do with it rather than value its acquisition. The mantra of the benefits of purpose and hard work are appealing, and although the ubiquitous capitals and exclamation points may feel hokey to new readers, female Hill fans will be glad to see a book that acknowledges their ambitions.
