Rosa Alban is a powerful wolf shifter. Sick of being treated like a commodity by her own people, Rosa seeks an alliance with her neighbor, shifter Luc Black, and prepares herself to battle other shifters for her territory and her autonomy. Rosa is hamstrung by the desire to protect the nonshifters who were enslaved by her late husband, and though Luc is enticed by the possibility of a territory of his own, he is also haunted by the memory of a wife who has been dead for over 60 years. Luc and Rosa’s attempts to form a plan and forge an alliance are muddled by too many side characters, including Guardians, Original Guardians, Walkers, Bleidds, a goddess, the Council, a wulfling, and a half-mad seer. Their differing political agendas only muddy the plot. DeLima’s ambition is admirable, but the romance is unfortunately buried and the resolution to the dramatic conflict is sudden and unrewarding.
