Misunderstandings

Tiffany King. Berkley, $14 trade paper (304p) ISBN 978-0-425-27479-8

After two years away, Brittni Mitchell reluctantly returns to Seattle for her friend’s engagement party. She knows it’s going to be impossible to avoid her ex, Justin Avery. But she doesn’t count on having to confront him instantly upon arrival—and for hours on end as they get stuck in an elevator together. King provides their history in a series of flashbacks; predictably, Justin’s serious misunderstanding of Brittni’s actions in college led to their very angry break-up. Their hours in the elevator allow them to clear the air and consider whether they can move forward together as friends. King’s second Woodfalls Girls novel (after No Attachments) benefits from Justin’s multifaceted personality, though he does act badly at times. Brittni, on the other hand, is naïve and quick to judge based on outward appearances. The story evaporates quickly, but the conflict is rich enough for readers to pass the time without regret.
