This uncomplicated contemporary western series launch will appeal to fans of cowboys, cooking, and costuming. Smart and self-reliant, Prairie Dawn “P.D.” Raines rejected her family’s hippie lifestyle and settled in Bliss, Utah. She plans on paying for upgrades to her restaurant with the prize money from the town’s inaugural Wild West Games, showcasing the skills of the original settlers; with her best friend, Bodey Taggart, as a partner, she’s sure to win. But when Bodey hurts his leg, he asks his brother, Elam, to sub in. Elam, whose young wife died while he was in military service in Afghanistan, wants nothing more than to isolate himself in his work and his cabin. Family loyalty makes him agree to take Bodey’s place, but P.D.’s girl-next-door appeal and gourmet cooking sweeten the deal. P.D.’s never had a lasting relationship, but Elam’s raw good looks make her hope more is possible. A slightly corny suspense plot and the excitement of the games provide a soupçon of tension. Bingham (Into the Storm) knows her readers well and hits all the notes needed to keep them happy. Agent: Danielle Egan-Miller, Browne & Miller Literary Associates. (June)
