Retox: Healthy Solutions for Real Life

Lauren Imparato. Berkley, $17 trade paper (384p) ISBN 978-0-425-27850-5

Certified yoga teacher Imparato quit her job as a Morgan Stanley v-p to create I Am You, a Manhattan yoga studio and “wellness lifestyle brand.” Her book offers ways to deal healthfully and mindfully with 20 topics pertinent to challenging, fast-paced times, including headaches, back pain, travel, sleep, tech addiction, and eliminating abdominal bloating through methods Imparato terms “alien baby debloat.” For each conundrum, Imparato offers quick fixes, a longer yoga sequence (illustrated with thumbnail photos), nutrition advice, recipes, and “mindset” advice (i.e., meditation techniques). Imparato’s vinyasa yoga style is anatomy-based and fluid. She’s a proponent of eating according to one’s individual preferences and asserts that coffee is not the enemy, nor is beef, pizza, or the occasional alcoholic beverage. The recipes included here are heavy on greens, as well as being quick and easy to make, and will clearly appeal to busy and overscheduled readers. Imparato also fills her book with personal anecdotes, Tibetan philosophy, and attractive black-and-white photos. Yoga practitioners hoping to ramp up their practice will appreciate Imparato’s no-nonsense yet enthusiastic style. The easy-to-use format gives readers the option of either zeroing in on a particular problem and its accompanying yoga sequence, or of savoring this lively book in its entirety.
