Hold Back the Dark

Kay Hooper. Berkley, $27 (304p) ISBN 978-0-425-28095-9

Bestseller Hooper’s less than suspenseful 18th Bishop/Special Crimes Unit novel (after 2017’s Wait for Dark) describes at length the psychic abilities of the various members of the FBI’s Special Crimes Unit, headed by Noah Bishop, and its auxiliary civilian squad, the Haven team. Besides being telepathic and clairvoyant, the team members see auras, regenerate after deadly blows (be they from hurtling boulders or bullets), and have the power to put people to sleep. All across the United States, psychics are experiencing horrible visions that tell them to “go to Prosperity.” This formerly peaceful little mountain town in North Carolina is in chaos, as a few of its citizens have suddenly started killing their nearest and dearest. The psychics descend on the town and soon realize that a portal to unspeakable evil has been opened and that the negative energy released is taking hold of the innocent townsfolk. Long on backstory, this entry is strictly for longstanding series fans. [em]Agent: Eileen Fallon, Fallon Literary. (Apr.) [/em]
