Charisma: Seven Keys to Developing the Magnetism That Leads to Success

Tony Alessandra. Warner Books, $23.5 (270pp) ISBN 978-0-446-52049-2

This self-help manual for enhancing personal magnetism by Alessandra, co-author of 12 other books on maximizing corporate leadership skills (e.g., The Platinum Rule), is aimed at the business management community. The author defines charisma as ""the ability to influence others positively by connecting with them physically, emotionally, and intellectually."" According to Alessandra, charisma is not an innate character trait but can be developed by practicing the behavioral skills that he describes here. In a seven-point program that includes numerous self-quizzes, Alessandra provides strategies for learning to be more persuasive, developing a visionary outlook and increasing one's adaptability. The author's recommended guidelines are well organized and clearly written, but his contention that a charming personality can be achieved simply by following this program, which will then lead to business success, invites skepticism. Alessandra's recommendations for improving public speaking and listening skills, though available elsewhere, are more useful. (Feb.)
