His Other Wife

Deborah Bedford, FaithWords, $13.99 trade paper (320p) ISBN 978-0-446-69867-2

Bedford (Remember Me) examines the unresolved emotions behind divorce in this psychologically persuasive novel. Hilary is left by husband Eric for Pamela, and also left to raise their son, Seth. When Eric and Pam return for Seth's high school graduation with their own children in tow, the tension between Pam and Hilary is disconcertingly obvious. Bad gets worse when an unsanctioned graduation campout goes terribly wrong, and the adults are forced to get along in order to cope and respond. Bedford writes with skill and acuity. She also has a good feel for teenagers, who are part of the emotional center of this book. The Christian notes in the plot feel less organic and logical than the rest of the development, but the plot itself is based on the biblical story of Hannah in satisfyingly subtle ways. An edifying read. (Feb.)
