My Very Own Tel Book

Nancy Hannah Glazier. Grosset & Dunlap, $5.95 (24pp) ISBN 978-0-448-18978-9

In an age when parents are concerned about how to protect their children from the outside world, here's a new way to make home itself a little safer. Glazier's spiral-bound, die-cut board book is designed to help parents teach children about the use of the phone. Each spread has room for a phone number on the left, and, on the right, a bright illustration identifying the person who can be reached at that number. ""Father at work'' has a space for kids to write Dad's phone number, and a place to tape his photograph; the opposite page shows four smiling, fatherly-looking men: a baker, a construction worker, a briefcase-toting businessman, a farmer. The illustration for ``Mother at work'' is as diverse; throughout the book, care has been taken to show people from various racial and working backgrounds. There are pages for emergency numbers and for friends' and neighbors' numbers, so that kids can distinguish between critical and casual use of the telephone. (47)
