To celebrate her first birthday, Mouse ``has baked an enormous cake,'' on which she places a single candle. Duck, the first arrival at the party, has a special gift--a candle for the cake. To avoid hurting her friend's feelings, Mouse places it next to her own. Several more animal friends come to celebrate, and all bring candles; the cake eventually contains 10, taxing Mouse's lung power to the utmost. Each page of this unique counting book is slightly larger than the one before it, until the candle-laden cake is finally revealed in all its splendor. As they enumerate the increasing number of candles--and guests--children will note that each of Fowler's perky characters sports a distinctive party hat, while the beribboned cake itself would turn Sara Lee green with envy.
