Ashley Bryant, Ellen Ashley. Fawcett Books, $3.5 (0pp) ISBN 978-0-449-14583-8

This novel marks the debut of the Center Stage series about teens with theatrical ambitions. When word gets out that TV star Ward McKenna will be performing in a local production of Romeo and Juliet , it sets Fillmore High's drama club on its collective ear. Students clamor to perform in or work on the show, which leaves schoolmate Joel, a budding playwright, in the lurch. His newest and finest script could be the school's most successful offering yet, but without enough talent to support it, the piece is doomed. Barri, one of the drama club members, has conflicting feelings: she wants to help her friend, but can't pass up the opportunity of a lifetime. Although Barri's dilemma is protracted interminably, Ashley's statement on loyalty and friendship justifies a read. Her breezy dialogue complements the story, and its show biz premise should please fans of the industry. Ages 12-up. (Dec.)
