FT-Beautiful Skin

Gail Gross, Honora Finkelstein. Ballantine Books, $8.95 (212pp) ISBN 978-0-449-90108-3

The reader is at first wary of the authors' promise that their program can retard the aging process and take 10 to 15 years of ""the ravages of age'' off one's face. But the eight-step skin-care agendum they outline is sensible and relatively easy to follow, and will certainly lead to healthy living even if it doesn't make adherents to the program look younger. The eight steps include nutrition and vitamin therapy; elimination of common poisons, among them tobacco, alcohol, laxatives, refined sugar, salt, caffeine and marijuana; an exercise routine; regular enjoyment of sex; proper skin cleansing and moisturizing and use of makeup; protection from the environment (sun, wind, air pollution); adequate rest and stress relief; and ``positive imaging,'' which entails overcoming negative self-image. An extensive bibliography testifies to the authors' painstaking research. November
