Watch Over Me

Sydney Landon. Signet Eclipse, $7.99 mass market (304p) ISBN 978-0-451-47621-0

Landon’s humorous writing and knack for irreverent dialogue can’t save her seventh Danvers contemporary (after Always Loving You) from the too-frequent moments when the humor crosses the line into crassness and the leads indulge in juvenile behavior. After Gwen Day’s latest ex ties the knot, she throws herself at Dominic Brady, her colleague and neighbor, little knowing the sexy former Marine has long harbored a yen for her. After a condom mishap, the two begin warily dating, each of them secretly thrilled but anxious about the possibility of a baby linking them permanently together. Unfortunately, Dominic takes his relationship advice from a bro who’s never been in one, and after an overheard remark, Gwen concludes he’s just not that into her, even though his behavior proves otherwise. Worse, their bad choices reverberate off each other for half the book. The tendency toward vulgarity and the duo’s adolescent behavior don’t add up well.
