That’s My Hat!

Anouck Boisrobert and Louis Rigaud. Thames & Hudson, $24.95 (26p) ISBN 978-0-500-65057-8

Boisrobert and Rigaud (Under the Ocean) return with a whirlwind game of cat-and-mouse—or rather boy-and-monkey—as a child attempts to retrieve his semicircular blue hat. After a monkey snags the hat when it blows into the zoo, the boy follows him from park to bakery, department store to library, locations that come to life in stacks of rectangular pop-ups that call to mind a three-dimensional game of Tetris. At each stop, readers can peer underneath and behind the pop-ups to find the hat-stealing monkey. “If you want to find a monkey, just go to the shelf marked M,” says a librarian (no surprise, she’s 100% right). With its bold primary color scheme, engaging visual humor, and various amusing encounters, this is a chase worth taking part in. Ages 4–8. (Feb.)
