A Sea Voyage

Moody seascapes that wouldn’t be out of place on a vintage watercolor tin spring to life in elegant pop-ups as Lo Monaco (The Small World of Paper Toys) showcases six sea vessels, including a lifeboat, caravel, tall ship, and ocean liner. The book opens calendar style, transforming the upper pages into the sky behind the three-dimensional sails and smokestacks of the ships. Brief accompanying rhymes (“When there’s danger close at hand/ The lightship guides us in to land”) have the air of sung chanteys, and background details about the boats’ origins, feats, and specifications are included.
