White Rabbit a Doc Story of He

Martha Morrison. Crown Publishers, $17.95 (0pp) ISBN 978-0-517-56816-3

The shattering experience of addiction is graphically, affectingly portrayed in this account of a woman doctor's 17-year struggle with drug and alcohol abuse. As a bright student, Morrison had no trouble getting into medical school and excelling there, despite her addiction. She describes the years of her psychiatric residency at an unidentified hospital in Arkansas, in the very hospital where a few years earlier she had been treated for drug abuse, depression and schizophrenia, telling how she masked her problem with the ``classic grandiosity'' of the addict. Finally threatened with revocation of her license, she entered a program for ``impaired professionals'' and followed the 12-step prescriptive of AA. Until then, Morrison had lived on the brink as a street-wise junkie with a professional title. A spiritual awakening and a fulfilling third marriage, she stresses, contribute to her sustained recovery. Today, Morrison is director of a social service organization in Atlanta. Author tour. (Feb.)
