This rambunctious royal redhead of the Kingdom of Hill resembles a kilt-wearing human tornado. Prince Lachlan's boisterous good spirits frequently shatter the castle's peace (and possessions), and sorely try his parents' patience. When the royal family learns, however, that the ogreish Great One has designs on the throne, it's Lachlan who saves the day. The frequent sound effects highlighting this caper are sure to delight: `` Shatter went the window. Tinkle went the glass.'' Chalk up another delectable romp for Australian author Hilton ( Dirty Dave ), whose tongue-in-cheek text is set off splendidly by James's puckish illustrations, chock-full of colorful, unexpected details. Ages 3-6. (Aug.)
