Annie and the Animals

Barbara Beasley Murphy. Skylark Books, $2.75 (0pp) ISBN 978-0-553-15749-9

Annie, 10, loves animals, but her father's allergies prevent her from having a pet. Instead, Annie befriends animals in the neighborhood, like the old German Shepherd Fritz. He belongs to ``Old Snootface,'' mean Mrs. Bardan who never pets him or lets him out of his cage. Annie has a plan, however. She has been spending her allowance on dog food, waiting for just the right moment to rescue Fritz. When she and her two friends discover a stray, starving kitten, Annie knows it's time for action. She and her friends carry out the rescue mission, but then must face the consequences of their actions. Annie is a lively, admirable protagonist. She and her two friends shine in an entertaining story with special interest for young animal lovers. Ages 8-12. (Sept.)
