A Map to Your Soul: Using the Astrology of Fire, Earth, Air, and Water to Live Deeply and Fully

Jennifer Freed. Rodale, $26 (304p) ISBN 978-0-593-23615-4

In this extensive if overstuffed manual, Freed (Use Your Planets Wisely), a self-described psychological astrologer, explains how astrology can improve one’s life. She outlines a “twelve-part journey into making your most exciting possibilities a reality” using an approach she calls psychological astrology, though it’s unclear how its goal of opening an “evocative and inspiring inquiry into all your divine possibilities” differs from traditional astrology. Drawing on the 12 astrological houses, she explores 12 “areas of life,” including self-awareness, partnership, and reputation. She explains how astrology influences communication skills and notes that earth signs tend to provide advice while air signs tend to distract interlocutors instead of “deeply listening.” Core beliefs comprise the ninth “area,” and Freed posits that because fire signs are restless and creative, they have an easy time updating beliefs. Exercises detail how to manifest outcomes through gratitude and intent, and develop creativity by scheduling time to practice art. This has a lot of moving parts—from the 12 “areas” and four elements to the psychological advice and exercises—while some readers may find the variety generous, others might be overwhelmed. Still, die-hard astrology readers will enjoy this bountiful offering. (Oct.)
