The Last Run

Kay Wolff, Sybil Taylor. Viking Books, $18.95 (352pp) ISBN 978-0-670-82634-6

The pseudonymous Wolff went to Colombia in search of adventure and became involved with one of the major cocaine-trafficking families. She served the padrones by concealing the drug for transport in luggage and in furniture cushions as well as acting as a carrier herself. In the early '70s her uneasiness at remaining in politically troubled Colombia increased when she witnessed the murder of a gang member. Politically liberal, she had difficulty treating servants with the expected arrogance and was distressed by the street urchins endemic to every city. She adopted two of these gamines and determined to take them back to the U.S. The story of her last run, told expertly with freelance writer Taylor, is excruciatingly suspenseful. 35,000 first printing; author tour.
