Lulu Goes Swimming

Susanne Strub. Viking Children's Books, $8.95 (240pp) ISBN 978-0-670-83460-0

In these companion books Lulu dreams big-kid dreams, like showing off on a zippy new bicycle for her Uncle Eddie. Sitting on her real bike--with training wheels--Lulu envisions herself riding no hands and can even ``pop a wheelie'' with ease. There's plenty of time to master these intricacies: ``Luckily, Uncle Eddie isn't coming until next year.'' In the second book, Lulu has similar fantasies about gliding through the water with no kickboards or floats, doing handstands and touching the bottom of the pool. Until that lovely time, Lulu sits on the edge of the pool wearing a rubber ring and water wings, dangling her toes in the water. The hopeful musings of a child intent on growing up are conveyed with tenderness and simplicity, while uncomplicated drawings washed with pale colors carry the stories to their quiet conclusions. Ages 2-5. (Sept.)
