This 15th annual anthology of American writing contains poems, essays and, most notably, vibrant short stories: Padgett Powell portrays a hard-drinking redneck in ``Typical''; Clarence Major writes of a black boy who witnesses his mother's tentative relationship with a white man in ``My Mother and Mitch.'' ``Eschewing experimentation, most of these tales are solid accomplishments from writers to watch,'' said PW.
