Just One More

Michelle Koch. Greenwillow Books, $11.95 (32pp) ISBN 978-0-688-08127-0

This counting book has a plus: each left-hand page presents a single object (child, goose, moose, leaf, ox); each right-hand page shows the plural form, in groups of two through 15 (two children, three geese, four moose, five leaves, six oxen). The whale has 13 teeth, there's a pack of 14 wolves and, finally, 15 sheep. Readers can learn singular and plural forms of irregular but common words, while also learning to count and understand the concept of ``one more.'' Koch's pictures are created with puddles of watercolor, sharp and bright against a white background and full of fun. The design includes very large print, making this a good read-aloud for groups. The obvious conclusion? The number system is logical and pure, but the same cannot be said of English plurals. Ages 3-up. (Apr.)
