Ernest and Celestine at the Circus

Gabrielle Vincent. Greenwillow Books, $14 (26pp) ISBN 978-0-688-08684-8

When Ernest promises Celestine a visit to the circus, a special experience is in store, one that begins before they leave home: in the attic is a costume that was once the trademark of Ernest the Clown. Ernest dons this attire and spruces up Celestine, and the two not only enjoy the scheduled circus acts but they also entertain the audience with an impromptu act of their own. As in Ernest and Celestine and Feel Better, Ernest! mouse and bear are an expressive, endearing duo; particularly well rendered are Ernest's camaraderie with friends from his performing days and Celestine's shy pride upon becoming part of the show. The scenes in the ring are disappointingly restrained, however; readers may wish for more of the drama and showmanship associated with the circus, especially when Ernest and Celestine are in the spotlight. Ages 3-up. (Aug.)
