Hobie Hanson, Greatest Hero of the Mall

Jamie Gilson. Lothrop, Lee and Shepard Books, $16 (149pp) ISBN 978-0-688-08968-9

The popular hero of four of Gilson's previous novels, including Double Dog Dare , Hobie Hanson's latest adventures begin when the Hawk River floods. He tries to save the day, but is humiliated when Molly Bosco (and her inflatable floating giraffe) rescues him and Toby, whom he is babysitting. After the flood subsides, Hobie and his classmates learn that classes will be held in the local mall until the school can be cleaned up. The kids at first believe they will be able to explore the mall and eat at fast-food chains, but instead are confined to their classroom--an empty department store. The classroom/store yields its share of surprises and Hobie learns that heroes come in all shapes and sizes. As always, Hobie and his pals are a spunky, likable lot; their adventures never lag. Gilbson's text doesn't stint on important details or quirky descriptions; this is a tale that--like the other Hobie stories--will be enjoyed by both boys and girls. Illustrations not seen by PW. Ages 8-11. (Sept.)
